Recognition + Respect = Recospect
Leadership is not about making big money, achieving a pin level or being selected to a position on the Deborah.nu advisory board. At the heart of good leadership lie several fundamental qualities like honesty, self-discipline, empathy, and a willingness to work hard for the well being of others. Our aim at Deborah.nu is to create an environment where role models and opportunities for leadership abound at all levels of the organization. To this end we must nurture an ethos for Deborah.nu which encourages members to see their success and leadership roles not solely as a means to living a privileged lifestyle, but also as opportunities to advance their personal growth and serve the Deborah.nu community as a whole.
This concept of all of us working together, helping and supporting each other's efforts is not purely altruistic. It has a very strong foundation in self-interest. Remember, success in this business entails the building of large organizations, too large in fact for any single leader to effectively support. No matter how energetic or competent you are, you want your business to outgrow the reach of your personal abilities, both numerically and geographically. Duplicating yourself many times over is where the power and leverage of Networking come from. Thus, everybody needs help; and an environment that supports and encourages the emergence of as many new leaders (helpers) as possible is of benefit to all.
The approach we use in Deborah.nu to create such a cooperative business environment is a combination of recognition and respect we call recospect. So far in these E-mail trainings we have described how to focus all your group's efforts on getting into action, building volume and new executiveships as fast as possible, and we've provided many specific techniques for you to use to this end. When properly applied, recospect will multiply the efficiency and effectiveness of your work many times over.
The concept of recospect has five main components:
1. Treat your upline like gold. The esteem you show for your upline will be mirrored back by everyone around. When first meeting a stranger, prudent people tend to listen with a hint of caution. If, however, you introduce your upline properly, as someone you respect and whose accomplishments you admire, your new reps and prospects will no longer see a stranger. They will recognize an opportunity to gather valuable information and be predisposed to act upon that information. Later, as your organization grows, your own reps and executives will tend to give you the same kind of respect you show for your upline. If you have done it right, their respect for you will multiply your ability to coach, encourage, teach and lead your organization a thousand fold.
2. Be coachable. The most direct course to success in this business is already well known. Trust your upline. They have a direct financial interest in your success so they will always give you the best advice possible. Success in this business is a community effort. Get in step with the successful people and mimic their actions exactly. Do not try to go it alone or do it your own way. Do not waste time and energy trying to reinvent the wheel. 3. Push trouble up not down. No matter what industry they are in, everyone in business runs into trouble from time to time. When you do encounter problems, always discuss them with your upline and only with your upline. The reason for this is that your upline are the only people around with the knowledge and experience to help you deal with unknown situations. Never discuss your problems with your downline and certainly never air them in public. This would do nothing but sow unnecessary confusion and negativity into the whole organization.
4. Be generous with praise. One of the most powerful components of leadership is positive reinforcement. Never miss an opportunity to praise even small accomplishments of the people around you. The more publicly you can praise people the better. Most meetings set aside a few minutes for recognition of the achievements of the people in the room, so make sure that the presenters know what you and your people have achieved so you can all receive deserved applause from the whole group. Praise works up as well as down. Always offer thanks to the leaders for meetings you attend and for any help you receive.
5. Practice the "Golden Rule." "The Golden Rule" is: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." This is good policy for everybody all the time, but in Deborah.nu we add a little twist. No matter where you are, "Treat other people's prospects and reps the way you want other leaders to treat yours." Maintain Deborah.nu standards for supporting open meetings in your locale without poaching other people's prospects. None of us can be in more than one place at a time. So we must help each other all around the world.
Everybody in our business has heard names like John & Giselle, Scott, Carleric & Ingela, and Vivienne because they are superstars whose success we all want to emulate. Look closely and you will see how consistently they use recospect -- both giving and receiving -- to support the growth and development of a steady stream of new leaders and rising superstars. Recospect is the tool they used to multiply the results of hard work far beyond the scope of their own reach.
