The good news is that anyone who is willing to work and be coachable can succeed in networking; no special talent is required. The bad news is that it usually takes several years of concerted effort to achieve the highest levels of success and it is often easy to become distracted by external factors, to lose focus and to become frustrated by your perceived lack of immediate progress. The danger in such situations is that hopelessness can set in and one can loose their vision - their belief - in either the company or their own ability to succeed.
How does one avoid this trap? How does one connect one's long-term goals and dreams to the minutiae of daily activity? Examples of such short-term and intermediate goals include: How many new prospects will you have with you at the next weekly meeting? How many members of your group will attend the company's next convention? Challenge your reps with a contest. Whoever has the most new people at the next Deborah.nu event wins a prize. Hold a phone-a-thon. Who can make the most calls; get the most "yes" or "no" responses?
Third, duplication by association occurs. People will do what they see you do; therefore, your attendance at events strengthens the events which strengthens everyone around you. This means that there will be more and better events available not just for you but for those new members of your organization that are at a long distance from you. In other words, working towards impending events helps spread organizations geographically. Moreover, as your group grows beyond your personal ability to stay in contact with each new member, impending events are often the greatest source of support and information for new people coming in.
The fourth benefit of impending events is first hand information. If you have ever played the "grapevine" whisper game you know that by the time the message gets to the end it is totally altered. This will save you tremendous amounts of training time and infuse a constant stream of good information into your group in a way you could never achieve alone.
